Bar Harbor, ME -- Aug. 18, 2008 – Soyatech announced today that Dr. Gale Buchanan, USDA-Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics, will speak at the upcoming Soya & Oilseed Summit, which takes place in St. Louis, Missouri on September 17-19 at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. Dr. Buchanan, whose responsibilities include oversight of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Economic Research Service (ERS) and National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), will deliver the keynote address on the opening day of the conference.

Dr. Buchanan spent the first 21 years of his professional career with Auburn University in the Department of Agronomy and Soils, with primary teaching and research responsibilities in weed science. He served as Dean and Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station from 1980 to 1985.

In 1986, he was appointed Associate Director of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations and Resident Director of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. He served as Interim Director of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations from June 1994 to February 1995. He served as Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from March 1995 to 2006.

Dr. Buchanan received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy from the University of Florida in 1959 and 1962, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology, with minors in Botany and Agronomy, from Iowa State University in 1965.

The third annual event in Soyatech’s Soya & Oilseed Summit series, Soya and Oilseed Summit 2008 will explore strategies for addressing the challenges and opportunities that arise as global competition for agricultural resources continues to escalate.
